We started The Chef’s Cottage in 2013 selling Jamaican food. It’s mostly just jerk chicken and… well… jerk chicken!
Before this, I’d been in the catering industry for a while – working in kitchens and stuff like that – but in my last job I was training restaurant staff, and it proved to be very time consuming. There was no time for family – it got to the point where I thought, “Enough is enough”, and I handed in my resignation. Now I have lots of family time and ‘me’ time, too.
I love working on the market because of the independence and the people – they’re absolutely lovely, y’know? I meet so many characters. Actually, I have a funny story – a customer came and asked me, “What kind of meat is in your chicken burger?” I found it absolutely hilarious. I said, “Errr, chicken?” and he said, “No but what kind of meat.” I was like, “…Chicken!”
My best seller is definitely the chicken wrap – it’s what my regulars come back for. They’ll never change their order – I know what to do as soon as I see them.
Here’s what a regular customer said:
I come to Clinton Market for my lunch every day without fail. I’ve been doing it for around two years now! It’s cheaper, the food is better and it’s fresh. The Chef’s Cottage is my favourite, then it has to be the Thai truck and the wrap man. The fact that everything tastes so fresh is what’s so amazing. I’m always here to annoy Gianjwan from The Chef’s Cottage. He disappeared to another market for a few days last week and I won’t let him live it down! I was wasting away!
For a quick lunch and the best smell your nose will ever sniff, pop down and see Gianjwan at Clinton Street.
